Canada 150e

In Mme Nancy’s class, I worked with her students to create a very big mural of the map of Canada. Students got into groups of 2 and each group chose a province to represent. They came up with an image that most describes the provinces they had chosen. Using insulation foam, we cut up their images, primed the foam and they painted it. We put some velcro on the back so that during the concert each image could be placed on the proper province at the appropriate moment.

Myriam Poitras had her music students sing songs that represented every province. While they sang the grade 6 placed their image on the Canada map.

The artwork was then placed permanently in their school after the show. It can be found upstairs in the hall.

Bibliothèque géante! Giant library!

Grade 7 and 8s of École Sainte-Anne are painting lockers to look like a giant library. This is project done through, ”one artist, one school”. We have started painting with 2 classes and will continue to paint with other classes until the end of May. Lets see how many lockers get to look like books!

Each student has chosen à book, they will paint the spine of the book on the door of their lockers.

Here is a before photo; Voici une photo avant de commencer;

IMG_4852_2

First step; sanding, and washing the outside of their lockers. Then priming!

The students that I was painting with where impressive. They were hard working and showed impressive talent. I love to encourage art so when students would come to me and say they would like to paint something specific from the cover of their book, I would usually just answer, well if you are comfortable doing that, I can give you the paint and brushes that you need. Some wanted a little guidance but really I just suggested the paint brush to use and some colour combinations, I showed how to do a blend of colours, in some cases I showed how to look at the image that they wanted to reproduce. In order for them to replicate it properly.

They learned how to paint with a paint roller and paint brush. They learned that we must prime first then paint, then varnish. They learned how to protect what you painted already by using tape or newspaper to block off areas such as the neighbours locker or areas on their locker that didn’t need this new colour that was being applied. The students learned to keep their environment clean. If any spill we must pick it up before it dries. They were awesome about all of this. I was told many times that the hallways were never that quiet with that amount of students in it!

In the end I painted with aprox 120 students! Here are many photos of the finish product. The students were very proud of their work, as they should be. I am also very proud of them. Someone will come and work with them to do the lettering on their lockers to finish it all up. But for now, they still look awesome! See for yourselves…

En 2e année, les élèves parlent à propos de leur communauté, donc leur enseignante à demander à la classe de discuter de ce qu’ils voient dans leur communauté et de faire des dessins à ce sujet. Voici leurs dessins;

 ArtSmart project with a grade 2 class at École des Bâtisseurs!

In this grade they talk about their community. So the teacher had the children discuss what they see in their community and then make some drawings of some of these things that meant something to them. Here are their drawings;

IMG_4265

On the far left at the top I have an open book which I was also using for inspiration for the style of image that I’ll give to the mural. The teacher liked that type of loose imagery and colour so I took that book and the students images and away I went to do some sketching!

Here is the sketch I ended up with… this after making sure to add an image from each of the children’s drawings, and taking into consideration the conversations the teacher had with the students. Them telling her all the things they like to do in their community!

IMG_4335

The students talked about loving to be able to walk or ride their bikes across the river on the walking bridge. They love having ice cream at the lighthouse, and putting their feet..or whole body..in the fountain at City Hall! They enjoy the jazz festival, biking, boating, walking their dogs and taking in shows at the Playhouse. And one thing most kids drew were apple trees! They love picking apples!  So, in this image I made sure to have all of those activities. You’ll notice the trees are taken directly from their images. I loved how some of them had apples without gravity!! The car and flowers are taken directly from their images, as well as many other parts of the final image. I want them to recognize their drawings on the mural.

One little fella made me a drawing of our mural, after I had showed them the image I had put together for them

IMG_4352

First step – Patching the wall and priming!  The janitors of the Centre did a fine job of patching the wall and having it all cleaned up for me. I then came along with my primer and gave it one coat. Just that looked great! But the final image will not have much white in it!!

IMG_4242

Step 2 – drawing the lines for the background image. We set up a projector for this to make sure the proportions where good.

Then I set up our work area with all our inspiration stuck to the walls around our mural. I want to make sure to stay true to the original little artists images! So, images up and painting purchased, we’ll be ready to paint!

Les élèves ont roulé les couleurs de l’arrière plan. Ils étaient exciter de commencer ce murale! Je doit dire que ces très plaisant de travailler dans cet environnement! Les jeunes, pas seulement de cette classe, ont toujours de beau commentaire à dire, à propos du murale à mesure qu’ont ajoute des couleurs. Ont y place juste le ciel par exemple, et les jeunes sont tellement content, ont penserait que le murale est fini! Ça ne prend pas grand chose pour contenter ces jeunes. Voici des photos lorsqu’ont faisait la peinture de l’arrière plan;

The students got to roll out the background colour and paint in other areas, to have the background completed. They were very excited to start! I must say that it is SO fun to work in this environment! The kids, not only from this classroom, but any of the students from the school who would pass by would have wonderful compliments and very nice remarks as we put the colour up. We just put in the sky and you’d think the image was done! Really fun to be working here! It doesn’t take much to make these kids happy. Here are some photos of some of them painting and the background getting done;

J’ai entré aujourd’hui pour ajouter de la profondeur à notre arrière plan de murale. Voici ce que nous avons jusqu’à maintenant;

I just went in today to give the background a little depth before putting in the images. So here is the background now;

IMG_4525

At the bottom you see some books..these are the ones that we use along with the students images, for inspiration, for the style of our drawing. The style is loose and I’ll try to stay within those same colours. Here is a photo of one of the pages.

IMG_4526

J’ai projeté l’image sur le mur pour le tracer au gros crayon;

Next I’ll be projecting all the little images on the wall and tracing that out ready for the students to paint it and fill it all in with colour. There is a nice big window next to this mural. This will be an extension of the Fredericton they see out the window!

We did some very nice work on our mural. I projected the image on the wall to trace it with my big 9B pencil;

Then the students came and traced the images with a paint brush and black paint. They impressed me with their talent! They all got the chance to come more than once to trace some of the images.

L’image s’en vient très bien!!

The mural is coming along nicely!!

We are still tracing the details, and having fun along the way!! Some of the students sing while they paint and others joke around with the friends that are there painting with them. I love watching them get into their painting while having fun.

Yay!

The image is now all ready for us to add colour!! Yay!!

IMG_0186

Voici le murale maintenant;

Look at the mural now;

We have continued adding colour and details…

After lots of hard work, the wall is done! The artist have a few details to do and then time to varnish!!

IMG_4782_2

Les jeunes ont signer leur nom et ensuite vernis le murale;

The students signed their names and then varnished the mural;

Fini! Done!

Summer Time Fun

This art collection shows the three main styles that I work in, with my acrylic paints.

  • My beach paintings: These are the waves, beach scenes, waterways or water sports. I grew up near the ocean, and now I miss it terribly, so I paint it!
  • My music paintings: These are completely influenced by music. I choose a song, and then only listen to that song while painting on my canvas. The music directs the colours and movements of my brush strokes. The end result is my visualization of that song as a painting.
  • My pourings: These look somewhat like oil drips. For these paintings I use only paint, a medium and the canvas. Much of the work is done in my head before I actually put it down on the canvas.

Sunset 60x30

Sunset 60×30

Sunset is one of my beach paintings. I tried to capture a sunset that that my parents witnessed from the beach one summer night. My mom took a beautiful photo and used it as reference to capture that moment.

80s 16x48

80s 16×48

80’s is one of my music paintings. For this one, I listened to 80s music while painting it. Brought back lots of fun memories!

''Teenage Dream'' 20x20

”Teenage Dream” 20×20

''Teenage Dream 2'' 20x20

”Teenage Dream 2” 20×20

Teenage Dreams (Diptych) is a pouring painting. I worked at having the sides match from one canvas to the other. It matches on more than one side, so it can be mounted different ways.  SOLD

''After Midnight'' 36''x48''

”After Midnight” 36”x48”

After Midnight is another pouring painting. This to me looks like an under water image of a big wave.

''Bow River'' 48''x36''

”Bow River” 48”x36”

Bow River is one of my beach paintings. It is a popular view of the Three Sisters mountains from the Bow River in Canmore Alberta.

''Tofino'' 30x24

”Tofino” 30×24

Tofino is another beach painting. This is a scene from my first time surfing. I surfed in Tofino with my sister and when we walked back to our camp spot, one of the other sites looked like this. I thought it was beautiful!

''Surfer Crossing'' 30x24

”Surfer Crossing” 30×24

Surfer Crossing is a beach painting. The sign on the bottom left corner is an actual signage that can be found in Hawaii. I played with words on this one, I have the surfer duck diving the wave, so she is ‘crossing’ the wave, hence, Surfer Crossing.

Kawanka 24x24

Kawanka 24×24

IMG_0636

Kawanka is a beach and music painting. This one I tried combining both styles. I went all out and even did the sides all funky!  SOLD

Breaking Dawn 24x24

Breaking Dawn 24×24

Breaking Dawn is a beach painting. I wanted to show the power and strength of a wave in this one.

Funky Monkey 36x24

Funky Monkey 36×24

Funky Monkey is another technique altogether! I tried something new with this one. I love the shape of a bicycle so I combined my love of colour with the shape of a bicycle. For this one, I didn’t even use a paint brush! I used my hands and the tubes of paint directly on the canvas. I really enjoyed making this one and plan on doing more of these, perhaps with different shapes. SOLD

Fun Run 60x30

Fun Run 60×30

Fun Run I did to music. This was inspired completely by one song…’Love Runs Out’ by One Republic. I just listened to that song when painting this one. So this is how I see that song as a painting! If you look closely you’ll see a roller coaster and a ferris wheel. SOLD

Lucky Stripes 30x24

Lucky Stripes 30×24

Lucky Stripes, I did with my pourring technique. I worked this one in layers. I usually don’t do that with my pourrings but I wanted to control the lines and get a little texture.

Secret Garden 30x24

Secret Garden 30×24

Secret Garden I also did with my pourring technique. I love these colours and the contrast of the pink with the turquoise. To me this painting is happy yet there is some mystery to it. This is why I chose that name!

IMG_4645

Dreamin’ is one of my beach paintings. This image is so relaxing to me. It’s relaxing to look at this surfer from underwater and the idea that the surfer is just sitting, bopping around with the little waves while waiting for the wave to surf is also a relaxing moment. She is wearing an anklet that I beaded with a real seashell.

This painting is SOLD.

''To the Beach'' 12x36

”To the Beach” 12×36

To The Beach is one I call my beach painting as well. They are all signs leading to various beaches. I had fun naming some local small beaches and other popular big ones in very different parts of the globe. I thought that would be fun all on one post!

Pièce de Transition

Ces deux morceaux de casse tête sont les pièces sur lesquels les jeunes de l’École des Bâtisseurs on peint en mai 2015 pour aider leur transition avec la nouvelle école. Tout le monde sont bien content d’avoir une nouvelle école qui donnera plus de place à tout, mais les ami(e)s vont être séparé. Ce projet à permis au jeunes de placer leur emprunt ou un coup de pinceaux, sur une des pièces qui sera dans l’école de leurs ami(e)s. Voici les résultats;

These two puzzle pieces have been painted on by the children who are at École des Bâtisseurs this May 2015. It was a project to help the children make the transition with the new school in the fall. It is wonderful to have this new school which means more room for all, but friends will be separated. Through this project, the children get to place their thumb print on the piece that will go to the other school. Therefore leaving a piece of them with their friends. Here are the results;

Acadie du Monde

Acadie du Monde, 36×36 on gallery wrapped canvas – SOLD

This was painted while listening to a song of the same name. The song inspired the colours and movement of this painting. I listened to the same song throughout the whole process to make sure to stay true to what I felt the song would look like visually. I finished it up with some beading here and there in the painting to represent the Aboriginal drumming in the music.  This painting is SOLD but will be on display, with other paintings I will have for sale, at the Grand-Falls NB show ”A tribute to l’Acadie” during the Congrès Mondiale Acadien, Aug 2 and 3rd 2014 at 8pm.
